CL604 Rated and Non Type Rated Captains Cobham Australia

Cobham Aviation Services (CAvS) is a Division of Cobham PLC, a global manufacturing and services company. CAvS is a contract aviation services company with operations in the UK, Europe, Middle East, South East Asia, Australia and the Caribbean. In Australia the CAvS Special Mission Business Unit operates ten surveillance modified Dash-8 aircraft under a long term contract with the Australian Border Force. It also operates a Dash 8 modified for hydrographic survey for the Australian Navy under a sub-contract from Fugro.

In 2014 Special Mission won a 12 year contract, with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), to provide a dedicated fixed wing search and rescue service from operating bases at Perth, Cairns and Essendon (Melbourne).

Four highly modified Bombardier Challenger CL-604 jet aircraft will be utilised for this service.

The aircraft will be tasked for the full range of SAR responses and stores delivery operations over land and water, day and night.

Response times are 30 minutes from call to taxi by day, with crews stationed at the airport, and 60 minutes at night with crew on call at home as long as they are able to respond to the airport within 30 minutes of being called out.

The roster will comprise two day shifts (nominally of six hours each) on base at the airport and a 12 hour night standby shift, nominally from home.

Potential applicants should carefully consider both the requirement to be accommodated close to the airport to be able to meet the night callout from their home and the anticipated low rate of flying, in the order of 100 flight hours per annum. The low flying rate will be offset by extensive use of a Level 5 full flight simulator located in Melbourne.

When called, the flight duration may be up to 8 hours and the total flight and duty period may exceed 14 hours. From time to time crew will be required to work away for a period of time to support large or extended operations anywhere in Australia, or internationally.

This is a unique opportunity for pilots who wish to be involved in a niche operation with a humanitarian focus, operating a modern jet aircraft in a highly skilled team environment. It also offers substantial lifestyle opportunities with intermittent travel away from home base.
